One example that springs to mind is that of the London Underground and its map redesign in the 1930s by Henry Beck. It was the first of the schematic image maps and was created to present the London Underground as a quick and efficient mode of travel.

With the map redesign not actually corresponding to a set scale, it portrayed London in a revolutionary new light and helped unite the London Underground’s new efficient image.

Naturally, like all designs, what we can see today has evolved, but the principles of the original are still unmistakable.
